Llanquihue was founded in the 19th century during the German colonization that developed in southern Chile. Its initial name was «Desagüe» because there both the Maullín River and the Llanquihue Lake flow into the Pacific Ocean, later it was assigned the name of Llanquihue, a word that comes from the word Mapudungún, which means "place to dive into the water".

Llanquihue was originally the name given to the railway station that was inaugurated in 1907, but the conveyance brought so much progress to the commune that it decided to assign the name to the city. Later, in 1950, the first industrial plants for milk, sugar processors, meat products, mollusk packaging, beer, among others arrived; reason for which it was known as the "city of chimneys".

In the commune, the beaches of Wiehoff, El Cisne and the Muelle de Paseo sector stand out, all of them are known for the cleanliness and warmth of their waters. In the Totoral sector, the Unsern Ahnen monument to the German settlers stands on a hill, also known as “Monument to our ancestors”, which was built in 1937 and is a tribute to the work of these foreign pioneers in the area from the lake. The monument consists of a stone wall and bronze plaques on which the names of the 80 settlers are engraved.
