Among ancestral territories, lagoons and volcanoes, the Isluga Volcano National Park is a perfect sample of Chilean nature and history. This park is located in the Tarapacá Region at an impressive altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level it’s quite extensive with more than 150,000 hectares and includes three communes and a volcano.
This park was founded in 1967, but the life in this area dates back to thousands of years, the communes of Colchane, Camiña and Huara give proof of this. Despite being in an area surrounded by volcanoes, the Aymara people settled on this land long before the pre-Hispanic period, leaving their trail of life and culture throughout the area. In the area you can also visit several towns that sell crafts for living, inspired by the ancient cultures that lived there, you can find alpaca weavings, ceramics, and sculptures carved from volcanic stone.
Considered one of the most biodiverse areas of the Andean highlands, the relief of the park is quite regular. The highest heights are recorded by the Quimsachata hills with 5400 masl, Tata Jachura with 5252 masl and Latarama with 5207 masl. But among all, the Isluga volcano, it’s the protagonist of the park, at 5,514,147 meters above sea level, the great summit of the volcano is always snowy and constantly emits what appears to be smoke.
In the Isluga Volcano National Park you can enjoy different outdoor activities. Among the most important attractions, apart from the volcano, is the Puchuldiza geothermal field, which is made up of geysers and hot springs, where the water reaches up to 85 °C. The field has ten fumaroles which, during the summer, can be seen at dawn in the highlands. During the colder months, the waters freeze into magnificent blocks of ice.
