Pomaire is a town in the Melipilla commune, located in the Metropolitan Region. This town is located 65 km away from Santiago and only 9 km away from Melipilla.
Pomaire is characterized by having a Mediterranean climate, with low rainfall that is usually more common during the month of June, normally during the day the temperature is warm and usually drops at night. The coldest months of the year are between July and September, when temperatures can drop to 6 ° C, while the hottest would be January and February with maximum temperatures of 25 ° C. The history of Pomaire dates back to the year 1583 when a group of indigenous potters moved from their settlements to the north of this town, due to the abundance of raw materials and its favorable location, being surrounded by hills. Despite being part of the customs of the town for centuries, it is in the year 1771 when the formal commercialization of clay handicrafts begins, the products began to be produced on a larger scale to later be sold in Valparaíso. Curiously, during the 20th century, pottery in Pomaire became an activity practically exclusive for the female gender, and a proof of that is that approximately 95% of the women of this town were engaged in this activity.
To this day, Pomaire is known for being a town of artisans, thus gaining a large number of visitors each year, who come eager to learn about this ancient work and acquire the beautiful creations of its inhabitants. In addition to handicrafts, typical Chilean dishes are also sold, such as the corn cake and the famous empanadas.
